Abstract. In this chapter, the rotary kiln freeboard aerodynamic phenomenon is described drawing parallels with fluid flow in conduits. The goal is to describe the characteristics of confined jets that determine burner aerodynamic mixing and, in turn, combustion efficiency, and flame shape and its character.
