I think I will start making the following: Reduce the time that lights are on, reduce the amount of food (without starving the fish), use RO water, and I got a kind of sponge that goes on the filter that the guy from the store told me will absorb some of the phosphates and reduce the amount of brown algae.

I personally choose to wash, just to not have to buy new sand. But if it is a large tank you will likely want to use new sand, as it would be cumbersome to wash all the sand in a large tank. Something that I have found from washing enough sand to fill my 90, 125, 180, and 500 gallon FW (fresh water) tanks. Is that the sand will litterly "sand" the skin right off your finger tips. I wear those big rubber gloves for doing cleaning when I wash sand. Much easier on the finger tips. Great write up though

You want all of the waste out of the bucket. Once the sand looks clean, pour that into the tank. Fill the bucket with more of the dirty or used sand, and repeat. Do this until all the sand has been rinsed out. To refill the tank with saltwater, cover the sand with a black trash bag liner, and place a heavy serving platter on the plastic.
